Is Jasmine Tea Herbal Tea? What the Ingredients Tell You

A jasmine blossom on a tea box can make the answer seem obvious. Surely a flower tea must be herbal? Turn the box over: often the first ingredient is green tea.

Jasmine tea is commonly green tea scented with jasmine flowers. In that case it is not a purely herbal infusion, and it contains caffeine unless the tea has been decaffeinated. Other bases and blends exist, so check the particular packet.

Read the base tea before the flavor name

ITO EN's jasmine tea explanation describes jasmine tea as generally made by scenting green tea with jasmine, and notes the caffeine from the tea base. That is more helpful than deciding from the flower illustration.

What a jasmine label may mean
Ingredients or descriptionHow to read it
Green tea scented with jasmineA flavored or scented green tea, with caffeine.
Decaf green tea with jasmineReduced caffeine does not necessarily mean zero.
Herbal blend with jasmineCheck every ingredient and any caffeine statement.
Sweetened bottled jasmine green teaCheck both the tea base and added sugar information.

Are jasmine pearls different?

“Pearls” usually describes the rolled form of the tea. It does not by itself mean herbal, caffeine-free or sweetened. Read the ingredients and brewing instructions just as you would for an ordinary loose-leaf packet.

A roomy infuser is useful when rolled leaves open up. Follow the seller's leaf quantity instead of packing a small basket tightly because the dry pearls look compact.

How should I brew jasmine green tea?

Use the instructions for that green tea, rather than assuming flowers need a long boil. Strain when the infusion is ready and taste it plain first. Floral aroma does not guarantee a sweet drink, and a longer steep can make the tea base dominate.

If the cup is rough, work through the guide to bitter green tea. If you are mostly searching for a caffeine-free evening drink, green tea versus herbal tea is the more useful comparison.

I would buy a small packet before a large decorative tin. Scent is a personal preference: what one person calls delicate, another finds too perfumed. Once opened, protect that aroma using the green tea storage guide, especially around strongly scented cupboard ingredients.
